The Thing About Renae

Can I tell you something about this little squirt?

She has this funny little way of learning new things.

She tries it out. She gets the basics, seems excited about it. Then pretends like she hasn't even heard of it, for what feels like aaaages.
Then...just when we've just about given up hope of her ever figuring it out, she busts out that skill like she's been doing it all along.

Take rolling over, for example: she tried it, did it on purpose a few times...then didn't do it again for months...until, suddenly one day, she just started rolling... and rolled all over the floor...and we couldn't stop her after that. Walking? She cruised along the furniture for months, not even daring to venture a step or two. Then, she wanted dad's can of pop, and walked across the living floor for it. Just like that! And, again, was unstoppable from that point on.

The same thing happened with sitting up...crawling...talking, even. It's like she secretly practices in bed at night...so that when she's ready, she can make the maximum impact, blow everyone away.

And such has been the case with potty training.

I've tried...no less than three times to get the idea to stick and stay stuck. And she knew what I wanted her to do. She'd clap for me and tell me I could have a "choc-chip" when I went to the bathroom. If you asked her where to go poop or pee (pardon my French)...she'd say "potty." And then refuse to go there. Sometimes, she'd try it out...y'know, IF she felt like it. I had pretty much thrown up my hands in defeat and decided that if she wanted to wear diapers until she was 10, then so be it.

And then, allofthesudden...this past week, she's wanted to go to the potty. ALL THE TIME. She's had dry diapers, days and days accident-free, and occasionally decides that she deserves a "choc-chip"....but mostly just rewards herself with a cheer for the "water" in the potty.  She's done so, SOoo well. Surprise!

You'd think I would have learned by now. Maybe after this?
I just might need a reminder when I'm trying to teach her how to ride a 2-wheeler bike...and pulling my hair out.

I'm just looking into the future wondering what lies in store for her....

In grade three still not showing any interest in reading, and then casually mentions she just finished "War and Peace"

or at 18 (when you've given up on her ever wanting to date boys) she announces she's engaged.

But in the meantime, HOORAY FOR POTTING TRAINING!

SO JEALOUS!!! I'm still waiting for the day when Emily decides that she doesn't loathe the toilet anymore. As of right now, she hides in the closet to do her business. Nice. THREE THOUSAND CHEERS FOR RENAE!!!

EXACTLY how my kiddos did it - but they waited until scant days before their 4th birthdays. GOOD JOB RENAE!
